At the time I worked on the concepts and technical layout and was a named inventor on the product but had never seen the final assembly. It is the internal assembly of an auto-injection device for growth hormone. It is a product I worked on 20 years previously. I found the assembly (attached image) recently on a shelf in a studio. Due to circumstances this can mean you never get to see the finished product…. …but never say never…. This can be a little strange, as you see your “baby” disappear off into other people’s hands to take a product to market. However, this isn’t always possible, due to working on specific stages of work or changes in projects. Seeing a product through from concept to manufacture is incredibly rewarding as it gives an immense sense of ownership in the product, and something I would recommend if opportunity arises. #innovation #productdesign #engineering #cognatedesignĮxperience of the complete product development from concept to manufacture is essential for design engineers to develop their skills.ĭecisions early in the process have expensive consequences further downstream, so a better understanding of the implications make for better concepts and more efficient development. What can we do to actively change this perception? The most satisfying part of my job is still seeing ideas come to life (even if they are lined up in tables full of components) Personally, typically no two days are the same, sometimes all the fun creative stuff, and other times the admin and documentation, but together results in the diligent considered solutions. The current perception isn’t a good image for attracting new talent into the engineering sector, and probably doesn’t reflect reality. Mountaineers and explorers, carefully prepare equipment and spend day-after-day achieving their goals, but we don’t focus on the colossal number of steps they have taken, our attention is drawn to what has been achieved. It’s often perceived as such due to the repetitive nature of processes, but this doesn’t focus on the amazing achievements can be reached. Many regard a career in engineering as a rather dull occupation. Sometimes repetition is exactly what an engineer is looking for, but not necessarily for their everyday work.
